Stormwater graphicWhat is stormwater?

Stormwater is not rain that falls from the sky but runoff generated when rain flows over land and surfaces such as concrete driveways, sidewalks, streets, parking lots, and rooftops and does not infiltrate the ground.

  • Stormwater runoff is one of the leading causes of water pollution in the United States.
  • Preventing stormwater pollution and protecting surface water is a job for everyone.

 What you can do!

  • Sweep up yard debris into piles and dispose of it properly rather than hosing or blowing it down the street.
  • Keep your vehicle leak-free and dispose of automotive fluids at a neighborhood auto parts store.
  • Wash your vehicle at the car wash not on the driveway or street.
  • Be sure to pick up after your pets. Pet waste contains bacteria that can wash into retention basins and parks where families play.
  • Use pesticides and herbicides according to instructions.
