Did you know that homeowners most often are the ones responsible for maintaining their onsite wastewater treatment system (a.k.a. septic system)? Proper system maintenance as well as mindful daily household use (ex., avoid putting cooking grease down the drain) will help keep a system from malfunctioning and will help to maintain their investment in their home.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a detailed guide to assist homeowner's in the care and maintenance of their septic system complete with a "Septic System Dos and Don'ts" section as well as a Septic System Maintenance Record.

Records of maintenance performed on the system must be kept and passed on to subsequent homeowners when the property changes ownership. For more information please visit Maricopa County Environmental Service website. www.maricopa.gov/EnvSvc.
