Home MenuPop-Up Dog Park (Temporary Dog Park)
A pop-up dog park will be available July 1 through Aug. 31 at Founders' Park while important maintenance is performed at the Town's Pocket Park for Pups.
Pocket Park for Pups will reopen on Sunday, Sept. 1.
The pop-up dog park will be located on the north side of Founders' Park (outlined in blue on the map below). There will be a designated area for small / timid dogs and a separate area for large / active dogs.
- Parking for the small dog area will be in the northwest parking lot (access from Ellsworth Rd or Aldecoa Rd).
- Parking for the large dog area will be in the Aldecoa lot (east side of park, access from Aldecoa Rd).
Benefits of Temporary Closure
Because the dog park is open 365 days a year, a maintenance closure is necessary to enable a usable park space into the future. Queen Creek’s dog park is a heavily used and popular facility. The heavy use has a cumulative effect on the park site; specifically on the ability for turf to grow.
The closure will allow staff to recondition the soil (strip, verticut, aerate, top-dress, re-level) and do deep watering, giving the roots time to strengthen up and grow deeper into the soil. Deeper, healthier roots promote turf growth even with heavy use.
Why the Pop-Up Park is Temporary
Safety - Aldecoa Ball Field use is minimal during the hottest part of summer, so conflict is limited. However, as use increases, so does the number of baseballs and softballs being hit into the temporary dog park area. We would need to make costly changes such as adding tall netting to the outfield fencing.
Turf - The turf in this location currently has low use / wear and tear. While it looks great from a distance, up close you can see it is thin and sparse in many areas. If the use becomes regular, the grass will die off; and because of how much shade is in the area it will be very difficult to grow back.
Improvements - If this area were to become a permanent dog park for use year around, additional infrastructure would be needed - permanent lighting, potable water, permanent fencing, etc.
